October 29th marks World Stroke Day, a time to shine a light on one of the world’s leading causes of death and disability and to remind ourselves that prevention is not only possible, it’s powerful.

At Style for Stroke, we believe awareness is always in fashion. This year’s global theme, “Together We Can Outpace Stroke,” calls on all of us to take charge of our health and protect the people we love. Because while a stroke can strike suddenly, it’s rarely without warning and most of the major risk factors can be managed with small, consistent changes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 90% of strokes worldwide are linked to modifiable risk factors. Here are six key ones to know — and simple steps to reduce your risk.

1. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

The number one risk factor for stroke. High blood pressure can damage artery walls and make them prone to rupture or blockage.

Style tip for life: Know your numbers. Regular blood pressure checks and simple lifestyle tweaks (less salt, more movement, better sleep) can dramatically cut your risk.

2. Smoking

Smoking doubles your stroke risk and even second-hand smoke is dangerous.

Style tip for life: If you smoke, quitting is the most fashionable thing you’ll ever do. Your brain and body will thank you.

3. Heart Disease

Heart rhythm issues like atrial fibrillation (AFib) can create blood clots that travel to the brain.

Style tip for life: Keep your heart in rhythm regular check-ups and open conversations with your doctor are key.

4. Diabetes

High blood sugar damages blood vessels and increases clot risk. Many people with diabetes also face high blood pressure or cholesterol.

Style tip for life: Balance is everything diet, exercise, and regular glucose monitoring can make a life-saving difference.

5. High Cholesterol

When “bad” LDL cholesterol builds up, it narrows arteries and blocks blood flow.

Style tip for life: Swap saturated fats for heart-healthy ones, and don’t skip those annual blood tests.

6. Obesity and Inactivity

A sedentary lifestyle is one of the sneakiest stroke risks.

Style tip for life: Move with joy. Dance, walk, swim  it doesn’t have to be a gym membership. Just consistency.

Dr. Rajnish Kumar, Principal Director of Neurology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, says it best:

“Prevention begins much earlier. Most risk factors for stroke are modifiable — meaning we can manage them through timely lifestyle and medical interventions.”
